Dion Avila, unarmed, murdered by Denver police
The members of BLM5280 are heartbroken and angered to learn of yet another murder of an unarmed member of our community, at the hands of the Denver Police Department. Mr. Dion Avila was not only unarmed at the time of his murder, but he was reportedly shot 7 times in front of his partner and child. Many of the details surrounding this murder remain unknown. What we do know is that the murder of Mr. Avila is further proof of the ways in which the Denver Police Department continues to terrorize our communities. Denver police officers are given carte blanche to act as judges, jury, and executioners with impunity.
In the days to come, we will no doubt be presented with a list of reasons explaining why the officer involved had no choice but to kill Mr. Dion Avila. And yet we know that death cannot be the inevitable result of confrontations with the Denver Police Department. Yesterday, Shane Potts entered into an armed stand off with the Broomfield Police Department. Not only was he armed, but he had several warrants for violent offenses. The standoff endured for 8 hours and ended “without incident.” The peaceful conclusion of this standoff in our neighboring community is further evidence that the Denver Police Department shows a severe deficiency in de-escalation skills and nonviolent resolution of interactions with Denver residents.
Our hearts and prayers are with the family of Dion Avila. We will continue to hold Mayor of Denver Michael B. Hancock, Chief of Police Robert White, and District Attorney Mitch Morrisey’s office accountable for ongoing terrorization of our communities and we will continue to fight for liberation.
